Albena
Albena is a purpose built resort which is approximately 45km north of Varna. It has a reputation for being more up-market and "architecturally inventive" than the other Black Sea resorts, and is probably the most efficiently run and cleanest. It is also the most expensive. Despite this you will still find that the prices are very reasonable by British standards, with a 2 course meal with drinks in a good restaurant will cost around £7 per head.
Albena is an ideal family resort with an extensive range of activities for adults and children alike. There are five windsurfing and sailing schools, jet-skis, paragliding and scuba diving. The resort's horse riding centre is the best in Bulgaria, with twelve hours of tuition and a variety of rides ranging from one hour gallops to day-long picnics. There are also half-hour tours of the resort by horse and carriage, which run day and night. The entertainment for children includes fairs, face painting and theme parks.
The 5 km long wide white sandy beach has been voted one of the cleanest in Europe. It can get quite crowded in summer and there will be a small charge for use of sunbeds and parasols.
The resort centre has retained its attractive large green open spaces and well-planned pedestrian areas. There is an excellent selection of bars, cafes and restaurants, and the large hotels can offer daytime visitors a great range of spa, health and beauty treatments if you are in the mood to pamper yourself. There are two bazaar-style shopping centres plus themed restaurants and bars open into the small hours. Many of the restaurants incorporate alfresco eating with a live show, such as fire dancing. It is unusual to see hordes of drunken groups as the resort targets couples and families.
